Grants
The grant giving side of the Winning with Waste scheme is
now finished, with all the monies now being allocated. £105,000
of grants have been awarded to businesses for 56 projects
in the Halifax area to improve environmental performance.
Grants have included:
- Energy conservation including efficient gas heating, insulation
and glazing
- Waste reduction
- Noise reduction
- Recycling initiatives
- Water conservation
- Pollution prevention
- Shredding, baling and compacting machines
- Solvent recycling equipment
- End of Life Vehicle de-pollution equipment
As well as grants, The 'Winning with Waste' project has
been contacted by 227 businesses to date. 75 formal visits
have been made to businesses, but many more were visited informally,
often whilst delivering newsletters or flyers. Environmental
literature is also available for businesses on:

Case study
Specialised Coatings Ltd
Specialised Coatings Ltd started in business as a 'one-man
band' in 1990. Their business activity is the finishing of
various metal components with paint coatings and they offer
a complete finishing system from pre-treatment to paint finish.
With 35 staff they are now one of the premier industrial finishers
in the north of England
Nigel White, the works manager contacted the Green Business
Network in October 2003 as the firm was looking to purchase
a solvent recycling unit together with an automatic spray
gun cleaning machine. It was anticipated that the purchase
of this would reduce waste disposal by approximately 2000
litres of solvent per year. Other environmental benefits of
the recycling of the solvents on site would include a reduction
in transport costs, hazardous waste storage, insurance- related
problems and the easier disposal of the inert waste.
After a visit to the company, and following a grant panel
meeting in November 2003, (at which the application was agreed)
a cheque was handed over once the machine had been purchased.
