Calder Future is a partnership between the local community, Calderdale Council’s Sustainable Development Unit, the Environment Agency, Northern Naturefriends, Green Business Network, Treesponsibility, Friends of the Earth and Yorkshire Water. The partnership exists to provide a co-ordinated approach to river and canal improvements between the relevant statutory bodies and provide opportunities for those that live and work beside the rivers and canals in Calderdale to participate in practical projects on the ground.

The partnership aims to improve the banks of the River Calder and its tributaries by:
- Protecting the river’s natural environment and the habitat of the wild plants and animals nearby;
- increasing local awareness of the benefits a river can have in stimulating and attracting new business and housing;
- increasing the use of the riverside for leisure and education opportunities;
- encouraging local people to take an interest in the river and participate in the scheme;
- organising regular river clean up days;
- Helping local groups interested in improving their part of the river to obtain the funding which would realise their plans.
Calder Future Business Stewardship scheme
Recently, Calder Future has been working with businesses situated beside the river and canals of Calderdale, providing free environmental audits and raising awareness of pollution matters with the businesses. In return businesses have been asked to contribute to Calder Future or its aims in some way, for example, either by loaning equipment or agreeing to spray Japanese Knotweed. Please see our case study: Calder Future Business Stewardship case study 2007.pdf
The Calder Future Partnership is involved in a wide range of activities and projects, the length of the river in Calderdale, from the development of local forums, river clean-ups, practical conservation tasks and educational activities in local schools, through to developing planning guidance and other policies relating to the Calder and its tributaries.
