Helping Businesses in the M62 corridor comply with Packaging Regulations
The
Green Business
Network has established PENNINE-PACK, a packaging
compliance scheme registered under the Producer
Responsibility Obligation (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2005.
The scheme assists companies along the M62 corridor (between Liverpool
and Hull), and surrounding areas to comply with the regulations.
The strategy of PENNINE-PACK is to establish locally based recycling
schemes utilising members' subscriptions and fees for this purpose,
in preference to exporting packaging waste to developing countries.
This investment into increasing the UK's recycling capacity follows
the spirit of the regulations and is in the long-term interest of
UK businesses.
As part of the service the GBN is able to offer members assistance
in gathering data as well as waste minimisation initiatives.
PENNINE-PACK gives members the opportunity to become further involved
in GBN projects, enabling them to demonstrate corporate social responsibility.
For example, Brook Crompton, HBOS, Lynwood Group and Interface Europe
Ltd, all members of the compliance scheme, were able to help with
the Cardboard to Caviar to Furniture (to Poland) scheme, which enabled
three lorry loads full of furniture, tools, carpet tiles and soap
to be transported to a homeless project in Cieszyn, Poland. For
more on this story, please see our October
News page from 2003. Another compliance scheme member, Sia Fibrial
provided material to be used in the biological filtration system
for the fish tanks at the ABLE
project.
