Every year around 40 million worn tyres are taken off cars, vans and trucks in Britain. Currently around 30% of these are disposed of to landfill. However new rules on the disposal of waste tyres, detailed in the landfill regulations came into force on the 16th July 2006. All waste tyres now have to be re-used, for example by re-treading, or the material on them recovered for further use, for example in the manufacture of sports or safety surfacing, or as a substitute fuel in cement kilns.

If your business disposes of waste tyres you have a duty of care to make sure that they are collected by a registered waste carrier who correctly disposes of them or recovers them on your behalf. Most importantly you must ensure you have the paperwork to prove it. Therefore, you will need to prevent anyone keeping, depositing, disposing of, or recovering your tyres who does not have a waste management licence. You also need to ensure that waste is accompanied by a waste transfer note.
