Trees for Yorkshire

T4Y is a White Rose Forest campaign that aims to increase the number of new woodlands in Yorkshire by bringing together local communities, the private sector and the expertise offered by partners of the White Rose Forest.

White Rose ForestEach local authority partner is currently identifying suitable planting sites for the campaign that will enrich the landscape, support biodiversity networks and help against the effects of climate change such as flooding. Each project site will have a local community group helping to encourage local people to join in to create a new community woodland through volunteer planting events. To ensure the “right tree in the right place” the woodland designs will be assessed by the Forestry Commission.

To support the project and contribute towards the cost of purchasing the trees businesses and individuals can donate online at http://www.whiteroseforest.org.uk/donate.aspx.

The first project of the campaign will begin planting in January 2011 at Scammonden Water, alongside the M62 in Kirklees near Huddersfield. Here 14,000 trees are due to be planted by the long standing Colne Valley Tree Society in partnership with Kirklees Council, Colne Valley Area Committee, Forestry Commission, Pennine Prospects and Yorkshire Water.  For further information including a walking guide, please go to http://whiteroseforest.org.uk/Explore-The-WRF/Kirklees/Scammonden-Water.aspx .

Planting will begin in January 2011 and include the next two winter (October- April) planting seasons until April 2013. The partnership is keen for community groups to join in and help plant the community woodland, please call the White Rose Forest partnership on 01484 234079 to register interest.
