From 30th October 2007 businesses that send waste to landfill will have to ensure that all wastes have been pre-treated. This pre-treatment of wastes is part of the businesses Duty of Care. It is required under the Landfill Directive, and is designed to increase the amount of waste being recycled or recovered, and to reduce potentially polluting emissions from landfill sites.
Businesses should find out from their waste contractors if their waste is sent to landfill and whether it is already pre-treated. If not businesses must either pre-treat their wastes themselves or ask their waste contractor to do it for them.
Pre-treatment may be as simple as separating waste into individual waste streams for recycling or it may be a thermal, biological or chemical process that reduces the waste in volume, reduces its hazardous nature, or facilitates its handling or recovery.
