The new rules on the pre-treatment of wastes together with sharp rises in the landfill tax escalator due to take effect in April 2008 mean that businesses should start to seriously consider recycling of their waste materials. Recycling waste materials could mean that not only are businesses legally compliant and lessening their environmental impact, but that they are saving money on their waste disposal costs.
The increase in the landfill tax escalator, announced by the Chancellor in the Budget earlier this year means that the present landfill tax of £24 / tonne will rise by £8 per year from 2008 until at least 2010/11. This means that it will now be cheaper for businesses to separate waste materials and recycle their waste than to send it to landfill.
If you would like help to recycle your waste, the GBN has recently updated lists of recyclers for the majority of waste streams. Please contact us for further information. Alternatively, Why Waste http://www.whywaste.org.uk/ offers a free online waste exchange for businesses in the Yorkshire and Humber region, to help them dispose of their waste. Your waste could be just what another business or community group is looking for. They may even be able to pay you for it!
