Green Traineeships get the Go-ahead at ABLE

The GBN’s ABLE project in Wakefield has launched a green trainee scheme after receiving funding from the region’s gas pipeline provider Northern Gas Networks.
The ABLE project, which works with young people who are not in education, employment or training, is nationally recognised for its pioneering outdoor learning and environmental awareness initiatives.

The funding, donated as part of the Northern Green Networks programme, enables the organisation to introduce its ABLE2BUILD traineeships.

Trainees have already been involved in converting former derelict garages into workshops which will be used as a training base. They will now have the opportunity to involve themselves with a host of different spin-off enterprises from the projects already established at ABLE, such as sustainable fish farming and looking after a heritage orchard and nationally important birds.
Director of ABLE Paul Hayward said: “It is wonderful that we have been given this money. There is a huge national agenda about apprenticeships at the moment and it’s great that we have been given this seal of approval from a local company to launch ABLE2BUILD, which will give Wakefield’s young people even more employment opportunities.”

Presenting the funding from Northern Gas Networks, John O’Grady said: “Northern Green Networks aims to help groups which are going the extra mile to make a real difference to their community. This is especially true of the ABLE project and we’re delighted to be able to support it.”
