The Carbon Trust has shown that the use of advanced metering by SME’s will on average achieve carbon savings of over 12% and achieve savings of over £1000 a year on their energy bills. The largest savings were achieved by high energy users, such as small manufacturing companies. This research was carried out as part of a three year Carbon Trust field trial into the use of advanced metering in SME’s to demonstrate the potential benefits of the technology and to understand if there is a case for encouraging the widespread adoption of advanced metering by SME’s. The Carbon Trust is now calling for new policy measures to support installation in all SME’s across the UK. They estimate this could save 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
