The GBN is always happy to work with local landfill operators to help distribute their Landfill tax credits to local community groups. This year we worked with Marshalls plc. to award grant funding to Elland Riverside Park for some much needed regeneration activities. This grant enabled 10,000 bulbs to be planted (photo above). If you are a Landfill operator in Calderdale or Kirklees, please get in touch to find out how you can work with us.
Autumn Crocus in Halifax
The GBN was pleased to be able to celebrate 2010, the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity, by awarding a grant to Halifax’s oldest natural history society - the Halifax Scientific Society - for a project to document and conserve the local speciality Autumn Crocus. Biffawards and BMX
Over recent years, the GBN has been the largest single funder of the Ravenscliffe High School community garden and the Midgley Community Shop. Midgley was one of six finalists (out of 170 eligible contenders) shortlisted in the Buildings for Community and Culture category of the prestigious Biffaward Awards 2010. The annual Biffawards celebrate the very best Landfill Communites Fund projects funded by Biffa and were held at the Black Country Living Museum, Dudley.
Ravenscliffe has been singled out for special praise by OFSTED as one of just 12 outstanding special schools in the country. We are proud to have continued our active association with the school in 2010 by designing, funding, managing and constructing a highly aspirational project to pioneer BMX for young people with disabilities.
“This whole project is really exciting and I feel privileged to be part of it. Thanks for all your hard work and commitment to it” (Assistant Headteacher, Ravenscliffe High School and Sports College)
In keeping with GBN’s guiding principles, we brought together three different community organisations from three different districts of West Yorkshire to deliver this BMX pilot project, incorporating edible wild plants as part of the landscaping scheme (we always try to seek out innovative projects with lots of added value!).
The pilot track at Ravenscliffe will stay in place as a school resource but it is only the beginning; the lessons learnt from this project will be transferred onto two further sites: Halifax’s Spring Hall athletics track and ABLE's new (10 acre) site in North Kirklees ABLE 2 Kirklees. Landfill Communities Fund Grants back in March 2011
The GBN hopes to relaunch its grant-making activities in March 2011 (in conjunction with WRG/WREN). This will reflect an important reform to the definition of landfill tax “amenities” which are being imposed by the regulator ENTRUST.
Communities in Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Halifax and Todmorden remain eligible for landfill tax as a result of changes made by SITA Trust late in 2009. Some areas of Heckmondwike and environs are eligible to apply directly to WREN. Further information and advice is available from GBN. Please get in touch.
