The £10,000 will go towards the purchase of the vacant co-op building in the village and its transformation back into a community shop with adjoining community room.
Villagers in Midgley have now raised £90,000 out of the total of £220,000 needed.
Since the original village shop and post office closed down over 5 years ago and notice was given last year to vacate the replacement community-run shop, the village of Midgley now faces being without a local shop and community space again. This latest project, which has the backing of Midgley Community Forum, aims to secure a permanent lifeline for these amenities in the historic former co-op.
Community Development Worker Nigel Oliver said “The grants panel were looking for a project that stood out and would make a real difference to the community especially in the current economic climate: Midgley Matters is a fantastic initiative that will not only retain the village’s only amenities but will also support a whole range of local suppliers and contractors” Visit http://www.midgleyvillage.co.uk more information on this project.
£10,000 was also awarded to Phoenix Radio 96.7FM to support the development of its foyer at Dean Clough into a ‘drop in’ centre for people of all ages and abilities. Phoenix FM highlights community issues such as the environment, housing, employment, disabilities and education and broadcasts to an estimated population of 235,000 residents in Calderdale. Its modest base at Dean Clough has an “open door” policy and provides a range of informal activities for young and old alike.
Mytholmroyd Memorial Gardens also received £7,000 to help them reach their target of £111,000 to transform the village memorial gardens into a contemporary green space, but sympathetic to the war memorial setting.
Two grants were also awarded for regeneration activities in Elland, one in conjunction with Marshalls plc.
SITA Trust revised its landfill funding criteria in November and areas in Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Halifax and Todmorden have now become eligible. Further information is available from the GBN or by calling SITA direct on 01454 262910.
For organisations ineligible for landfill tax, a new opportunity is available for local organisations in both Kirklees and Calderdale to benefit from another national support scheme. Funding is available over the next three years to small, “grassroots” organisations to support activities in their neighbourhoods. The scheme is being managed locally by Calderdale Community Foundation in partnership with Voluntary Action Kirklees. For more information please visit their www.cffc.co.uk.
